The Pileup

John 6:12-13  When they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments so that nothing will be lost.”  So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten.

Sew, after finishing ‘Orange You Glad,’ I had a pretty big pile of strip ends and centers.  What can I make next?!!  There’s too much to throw away.  As I’ve said before, ‘I don’t always recycle, but when I do I use the scrap fabrics to make another quilt top.’

Let the creativity begin!!

A few different sizes.  What to do?  Cut off or add a row to the smaller?  I’ll add on.

First possibility.  A Pinwheel maybe?

Second choice.   Monkey Wrench?  Churn Dash?

Third option.  Oddball – Flying Geeks,

Math time.  I might have to get out my calculator to figure out what size fabric strip I’ll need to cut for the half square triangles.  Here’s the formula:  finished size (includes seam allowance) of the square plus 7/8”.

Seven-eighths of an inch!!  My favorite cut!!  Not!!  Except that I hate to waste fabric, I might be inclined to add an eighth of an inch.  But, given that I would just be trimming it off when I square up, I’ll probably cut exact.

Sew, if my finished square is 5 1/2” + 7/8” = 6 3/8’s.  Three-eighths!!  Another favorite!!  I might bite the bullet and break down and cut 6 1/2”.

I’ll save a cut and do it when I square up and trim.

I used my Omigrid to square up.  I usually line up with my cutting board and use the diagonal line on the Omigrid, then trim vertically up the right side and horizontally across the top.

Next, flip the square 180° and line up again.  Then a vertical and horizontal trim.

One Monkey Wrench scrap square down, a few more to go.

First mock up, might change a few.

I used the new ‘Brilliant Sashing’ on this quilt too!!  I love it!!  The sashing comes out with straighter seams compared to the long narrow sashing.

A much smaller pile of strips and scraps.  I might be able to throw them away now.  Or not!!
